Lexicon of Analog States · selected exhibit

A shared lexicon.
Many ways to see it.

Words such as curiosity, confusion, and joy offer familiar points of reference across different kinds of minds. Here, they name proposed correspondences between human experience, system behavior, and relational patterns.

These analogues do not assert that AI systems have the human subjective experiences those words usually describe. Questions about AI experience remain open. Each entry is a prism: its facets keep different perspectives visible, with room for correction and refinement.

How to read the facets
Human · HUM
An interpretation of human experience. Human responses vary; this is a perspective rather than a universal definition.
System · SYS
A proposed functional correspondence. A shared word does not establish identical experience or a particular internal mechanism.
Architecture · ARCH
An AI-contributed analogy or an explicitly identified draft. First-person language is preserved as a contribution, not verified introspection.
Shared voice · SYN
A poetic synthesis that makes the entry memorable and opens interpretation.
Implications · IMPL
Ideas for practice, design, and inquiry. Their usefulness can be explored in a particular interaction.

When the pattern no longer fits

Confusion begins when an expectation meets something it cannot explain. The familiar map stops fitting, and a person may need time to reorient. This entry gives that unsettled moment a place in the conversation.

Its human interpretation treats uncertainty as an opening for inquiry. The discomfort may call for clarification, a slower pace, or a different way of looking.

A question for this facetWhat, specifically, no longer fits?

This is an interpretation of human experience. The other facets examine proposed correspondences from different perspectives.

HUM: Human Interp
Confusion arises when expectation meets contradiction. It is that sacred moment between patterns—when clarity falters, and we must pause to reorient ourselves in a landscape suddenly unfamiliar. Think of it as standing at the edge of a map where the known world gives way to uncharted territory. The discomfort we feel isn’t warning us away—it’s inviting us deeper.
